The traditional Lantern Festival marks the end of the Spring Festival in China. During the Han Dynasty at the dawning of our era, the Chinese were subject to an evening curfew. However, on the 15th day of the Chinese New Year, the emperor made an exception. People lit lanterns, hung them in rows throughout the city and carried them through the streets. Originally, the Chinese lit lanterns to help guide the souls of their ancestors to the afterlife. These days the Lantern Festival is mainly for children, who parade through the streets by evening with their colourful lanterns.
